This is Our Wake-Up Call

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and the cause and prevention of disease.” – Thomas Edison

The U.S. makes up approximately 4% of the world’s population, yet we have suffered 20% of the deaths from COVID-19.  Why are we suffering such disproportionate number of deaths?  The reason is that Americans as a whole are not very healthy.
When compared to other Western nations, we finish last or next to last on every single health indicator. Two-thirds of our citizens are overweight.  One-third of us are obese.  Almost half of the adult population has high blood pressure.  Over 30 million adults are diabetic and we have more arthritis and more auto-immune disorders than any other Western nation.  Eight-five percent of COVID deaths have involved at leastone co-morbidity with hypertension and diabetes the most common.  This is sad and unfortunate.
The good news is that we can turn it around, but it will not be through conventional medicine. Medicine is practiced on a disease-based model, not a health-based model.  Medical doctors generally are taught how to diagnose a disease and prescribe the right drug for that diagnosis.  Most chronic conditions, like hypertension and diabetes need better lifestyle modifications, not more medicine.
