The Price of Protection

We’re hearing from some of our patients that the second Covid vaccine can pack a punch…fever, chills, joint pain, body ache, headaches, fatigue and muscle pain. These symptoms can start sometime during the first few hours and last for a day or two. For patients who had Covid before, these symptoms may present after the first dose. Why does this happen? What does it mean?

Priming The System

It’s because the first time the immune system comes in contact with something it’s getting primed. That can apply to everything from vaccines to allergens. It is rare that the first exposure causes a strong reaction. After that, the immune system recognizes it so you may have a much stronger reaction. Thus, whether it’s the first vaccine for those who have had Covid or the second vaccine for those who haven’t, a strong reaction simply says that your immune system is working properly.

What Can You Do?

Plan Accordingly: If you’re concerned about your reaction to the first or second dose, plan to lighten your schedule or take off the next day or two.
Don’t Go: Reschedule your appointment if you are in a weakened state or experiencing some of the systems mentioned. Those with allergic reactions to vaccines should consult their medical doctors.
Get Rest/Hydrate: Before and after your vaccine appointment
Seek Chiropractic Care: A visit to your chiropractor can help minimize side effects such as, joint and muscle pain, head and body aches.
It’s The Price We Pay: Be grateful that your body is doing what it should. The benefits of the vaccine include protection and peace of mind and surely outweigh the risk of side effects.
