Backpack Safety

School is starting soon which means there is a lot to do. One thing to keep in mind is getting a proper backpack for your child and to make sure they are carrying it safely. Having a backpack that is too heavy or being worn incorrectly can lead to back, neck and shoulder pain. It can also cause your child to develop poor posture. Here are some tips to help maintain proper backpack safety.

  1. Wide shoulder straps will allow for better support and helps reduce the pressure on the shoulder.
  2. Wear both shoulder straps on both shoulders to avoid all the weight being placed on one side of the body. This will prevent the body from leaning to one side and distribute the weight evenly.
  3. Having a padded back of the backpack can help prevent being poked by objects in the bag.
  4. Backpacks with multiple compartments help distribute the weight of the objects in the bag. Have the heavier objects in the center of the bag.
  5. The bottom of the bag should not be more than 2 inches below the waist. If it is too low it will cause the child to lean forward putting more stress on the back and neck.
  6. The backpack should not weigh more than 10-15% of the child’s body weight. Overloading the bag will cause more stress to the spine and the shoulders.
