Three Simple Tips to Get Through Thanksgiving
The holiday season is upon us and can be a wonderful time of year, filled with gatherings, travel and of course delicious meals! These things can knock our healthy habits off track. Your health goals should not hinder your enjoyment. Here are some simple tips to minimize the negative effects.
- Be active before and after the big meal. Getting in a workout prior can help deplete the glycogen (sugar) stores in the muscle. This means the food eaten later in the day will be used by the muscles and not stored as fat. After the meal, avoid laying on the couch. Walk around, help with cleaning up, play with kids, anything that involves light physical activity. This will aid in digesting.
- Eat Slow. Make sure to fully chew your food (around 20 chews), this will make it easier to digest, reducing bloating and gas. Also, when eating too fast the body does not have time to register if it’s full or not. People will tend to overeat and feel extremely fill after the meal when eating too fast.
- Proteins first, then vegetables. When deciding what to eat, first go with the protein source and then vegetables. This will reduce the spike of insulin, which will help the body store less fat and help reduce the fatigue after a big meal
