How to Reduce Tension Headaches
The suboccipital muscles are the main muscles to become tight. These muscles are located at the base of the skull. They help move the skull up, down and side to side. When they tighten or become irritated, pain will start at the base of the skull or even rap around to the eyes.
Releasing these muscles with some kind of ball like a lacrosse or tennis ball can help to reduce this pain (see video below). Taping two of these balls together to form a peanut shape is helpful to hit both sides at once. The key to this is trying to do this before the headaches start, if you are prone to them. Try to hold pressure on this area for at least 3 min. Try not to do it more than 10 minutes at a time. Repeat this 3 times a day. The pressure should be tolerable, more is not always better.
